What does it mean to be a magician? What is magic to you? Do you see yourself as a magician? There is a difference between sleight of hand magic, where you pull a rabbit out of a hat and real magic where you work with your guides and other spiritual forces to create a life that is fulfilling for you.
I’ve often been fascinated by what somebody’s definition of magic is. What that definition is can tell me a lot about what they are creating in their lives. Do they have a peaceful life that they enjoy or are they struggling in some area of life? I have also found that children have the strongest magic of all. I will share an old saying I learned from a Cherokee native and that is, “ children have fought wars and won”. They are sharing this because children have an innocence and faith about them where anything is possible.
When I was nine years old, I sat with some friends in an old bush that we had growing near our house. The bush was full of these green, bitter tasting berries and thorns, and it was almost as big as a tree, so it was possible to sit in it, although you had to be aware of the thorns.
While we were sitting in it, I told my friends about having lived in Germany before and how you could eat any of the berries off of the bushes (we were in Southern California at the time of this telling). I also told them about how we would eat these candies called gummi bears. At this point in the early 70s gummi bears hadn’t made it across the ocean yet, so nobody in the US had heard of them. I described all the different colors and flavors and my two friends who were sitting in this bush with me desired to know what they tasted like.
We had just seen a Disney movie called Bedknobs and Broomsticks about a woman who believed she was a witch who was looking for some magic words, which she found. I suggested that maybe if we sang the words together, we could turn the nasty green berries into gummi bears. We all got excited about that idea, and never thought for an instant that it wasn’t possible, so we begin doing this Disney chant.
We were laughing and giggling as we did it - and the berries changed. They didn’t change their shape, but they did change their color, and they were glowing and bright. We stopped singing, and started eating the berries which tasted exactly like the gummi bears I remembered from Germany.
We noticed that the berries were tastier when they were closer to us. But the farther outside of us and towards the end of the bush they grew, the more they returned to their bitter taste, and we stopped eating them.
Does this seem impossible to you? I never really thought much about it when it happened or after. It never occurred to me that changing one thing into another was impossible.
Here is another story for you from a friend of mine who is an artist in Australia. She had a tree that grew in her backyard and she loved climbing to the top of it, and so she did this one day. Mind you this tree was about three stories tall! She reached to the very top and there was a birdhouse, which had never been there before. It had a small hole in it for a bird and when she peeped in the hole, she saw something inside of it.
Inside that birdhouse was an apple. A nice fresh, rosy red apple. This was not an apple tree. She had no idea how the apple got in there, as no one who was much bigger than her (at age 5!) could climb up to the top of the tree because of the weight of the branches. She opened the birdhouse and ate the apple, which was simply delicious, as a miracle apple should be.
Let me offer you a quote from Lewis Caroll’s book Alice in Wonderland:
“Alice laughed. 'There's no use trying,' she said. 'One can't believe impossible things.'
I daresay you haven't had much practice,' said the Queen. 'When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast. There goes the shawl again!”―Lewis Carroll
